Noting that they long ago documented all sport stories from the late 1980s, documentary producers at ESPN have turned to a new tool: invention. "30 for 30 is more than the mere reproduction of historical footage," says Dan Jorgensen, senior vice president of programming. "It's that feeling of nostalgia."

"Honestly, we assumed someone would have noticed by now," remarked Greg Cantrell, producer of the recently aired "CSU: The Untold Story of the National Championship." Yet months after airing, no one has publicly noted that CSU has not in fact won a national football championship and its troubled star quarterback, "Max Payne," in fact never played for the team.

"As long as we follow the basic script and having swelling music, we can literally say anything," said one employee who refused to be named for fear of losing their extremely easy job.

When asked for comment, viewers refused to believe that these memories were not in fact real, often insisting that they remember well watching the reputed game and cheering for the nonexistent team.

Disney, the parent company of ESPN, refused to comment.
